THE PROJECT

So I had an idea. What if you could take the classic and eternally boring Family Game Night classics like Candyland, Monopoly, Battleship, Poker, etc. and turn them into wild, chaotic game nights merely by modifying the rules? So MODRULES Games was born. I worked with a talented small team to build the decks of cards, playtest them, and prove the concept was great. But now it was time to promote it. So I tasked myself with creating a video as witty, creative, and memorable as the cards themselves. Thus, the Kickstarter Promo Video.

PRODUCTION

It was time to craft the story but I had to do it within a short amount of time. So I used the Black/White/Orange color theme we’d established as the Brand Colors and decided to use minimal characters and more simplistic geometry within these scenes to quickly transition in and out of the major sections. I built most of the assets in Blender, and incorporated onscreen graphics in After Effects for a potent and memorable video.

An initial test animation of the table scene using the simple shaders I’d developed to match the brand look.

The Kickstarter Pitch video was more than just CG imagery, it also required printing physical cards and staging scenes to showcase the ‘realness’ of the product.

I was really proud of creating the stylistic outline shader in Blender that gave the characters their exterior outlines, in addition to also animating every character, camera, and object in just a few short days.

FINAL RESULT

Summary

Although the MODRULES Kickstarter was unsuccessful, I am really proud of all the effort I put into the video. I treated my idea like a brand, and it showed. Someday, MODRULES will launch again, and I know we have what it takes to make it a success.
